Pete's AUTOGRAPH Page:
KMET's Paraquat Kelley!

Paraquat Kelley was a DJ on 94.7 KMET before it became 'The Wave'. He was one of my earliest comic idols. KMET employed Jim Ladd back then, along with "The Burner" Mary Turner, and other charismatic platter spinners.

They played Foriegner, Zep, The Eagles, that kind of fare. But my favorite was a daytime "newsman" named Pat "Paraquat" Kelley, who conducted interviews with plain old folk, showing great respect and curiosity about their stories. But he would then deconstruct interviews, asking his subjects bizarre, inappropriate questions, and bellowing a sarcastic guffaw at random moments.

Paraquat was before his time, an early day Jon Stewart. And he had a great voice. I believe I wrote him in '79, and he kindly returned KMET stickers, a Styx sticker (sadly misplaced at this time) and an autographed 4 x 6 headshot, calling me 'Peterquat'.

Does anyone know what became of him? * For those of us that remember the station, it was always fun to listen to Jim Ladd blaze his Ohio Red and ramble on about how the bass line of some song was ultimately the the cure for the cold war.

Just to the right of the dial was KLOS at 95.5 fm, but I was always a KMET guy. They had better dj's. And better bumper stickers - the KLOS logo conformed to the trendy Mork rainbow border that was in vogue at the time, while KMET's logo was inventively printed upside down.

* Reader 'Mark H' wrote in, fondly remembering Paraquat's fish report. Thanks, Mark. And SoozGo found a website listing famous LA dj's, including 'quat and his father.

* Reader 'Radio guy' sent this beauty, to put the issue to rest.

My father worked down the hall from Dutch
at the 'Die Hard building' in Century City.

This one is nice. Crispin Hellion Glover.

Always nice to have Alan Dershowitz in your corner.

Henry Rollins' grandmother and my grandmother are sisters,
which means we're related. If that isn't scary enough, read the letter
Rollins wrote to his grandmother on the back of a Raymond Pettibon flier in '82.
